Hayes Rule (19) is the senior editor and founder of Youngspeak. A self-renowned sports fanatic, he covers the NFL, NBA, PGA and fantasy football. Rule is an avid fan of the Miami Dolphins, Miami Heat and Florida State University athletics.
Rule, also known as “The Sportz Guy” -- notice the “Z” instead of “S” to differentiate himself from the more well-known Bill Simmons, who also goes by the pseudonym, “The Sports Guy.” Bonus points for originality -- lives for sports. Whether it’s playing sports or talking about them, he thrives off the competitive nature of the game. Hayes has played sports since a young age – most notably golf since the age of 2.
Rule currently plays golf competitively; he played tennis in high school and basketball early in his high school career, but he went his separate ways with basketball once he realized two things: (1) he was white and 5-foot-3 at the time, and (2) he was much better at golf. Scratch that -- exponentially better at golf. He’s currently a sophomore playing Division I golf at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia.
Playing sports is simply not enough for him. He found a love for discussing sports at a young age; for a mental picture… at the age of 10, he started playing fantasy football against adults to feed his hunger. Since then, he has spanned across message boards throughout the web to debate and express his opinions.
At the age of 16, he started taking his writing more seriously. Rule wrote for his local newspaper, The Eatonton Messenger, in high school, covering high school sports and other community events. He worked a summer internship at The Telegraph in Macon, Georgia — where some of his stories were featured on CBS Sports, NBC’s Pro Football Talk and other sites — before his freshman year at Mercer and still writes for the paper as a freelancer on top of his staff position at the school’s paper, The Cluster. But that’s not enough, and that’s why he’s here. In the future, Rule plans to pursue a career in law with sports media as a side gig — whether it be print journalism, broadcasting, radio or column work.
“From every aspect except on the playing field, we’re probably a first-class organization in the National Football League.”
– Dolphins’ owner Stephen Ross
