Ben Goldberg (18) is a staff writer for Youngspeak. He is the only Youngspeak member who does not personally know Hayes, but that does not stop him from taking shots at Hayes’ beloved Dolphins. Ben has a working knowledge of most sports and can hold his own in a conversation about them; however, he knows the most about the NFL, NBA, NHL, and world soccer or fútbol (so people won’t be upset). As a fan of the Washington Redskins, Washington Capitals, Miami Heat, and Liverpool F.C., Ben has, for the most part, endured years of disappointment and misery. All of his favorite teams leave Ben optimistic only for them to be knocked down as they are knocked out in the second round of the playoffs (if they are lucky enough to get there). Despite that, Ben only cries a little when one of his teams blows a 3-0 series lead.
Ben found his love for sports at a young age, having played a large number of sports in his youth. His true athletic ability was realized when, during T-ball, he tried to field the ball while running the bases. In addition to T-Ball, Ben has also played baseball, soccer, flag football, basketball, golf, tennis, rugby, and handball. As he got older, Ben began to delve deeper into the world of sports. Ben remembers when he would lie in bed at night watching NFL Game of the Week on his old school iPod classic. Currently, Ben plays goalie in ice hockey, having been dubbed by himself as “the next Martin Brodeur.” He is currently open to any scholarship offers that schools would care to send his way. Displaying average goaltending with fundamentals and technique right on par with what it should be at his age, Ben is not at all surprised that he has not received any offers yet.
Ben has been playing fantasy football since middle school and has been fantasy football champion for five years straight. He has yet to have a losing season (which is why Hayes won’t join a league with Ben; he knows Ben will beat him). Ben’s love for fantasy football is what got him writing for Youngspeak Sports. Ben started by giving fantasy advice to his friends and, when by some miracle it worked, it was suggested to Ben that he consider writing a fantasy column for the school paper. As Ben had nothing better to do with his spare time, he thought the idea seemed like a good one. After reading his fantasy column, Hayes determined that Ben was exactly what Youngspeak was missing and begged him to join. Being so modest, Ben was humbled and accepted the position.
Ben is highly critical of all of his favorite teams; because of this, Ben’s biggest pet peeve is when he is called a bandwagon fan. Ben feels that a true bandwagon fan would not be so critical of his teams, because he would not be able to see anything wrong with them. As stated before, Ben is a Miami Heat fan. Ben is always willing to explain the reason for it; he cannot, however, include it in this bio as it would too long. If for some reason you really are interested in knowing the reason, send him a message on Twitter or an email, and he will try to get back to you in a timely manner. The short answer is: He is not a Heat fan because of LeBron James.
When Ben is not writing for Youngspeak you can find him banging something out on his drums, in the theatre working on his acting game, or in the lab editing videos for his YouTube channel (go subscribe to that). Ben is an avid supporter of the “You like that?” movement 2015, and his favorite type of pie is key lime.
“Do. Or do not. There is no try.”
