Since this is a column about a "guy eating lunch," I think it was inevitable that eventually there would be wings.
After all, is there a more "regular dude" food than chicken wings? Wings and beer go with sporting events and guys' nights so seamlessly, we often don't even think about another food option for such festivities.
As a disclaimer, this is not to say women can't like chicken wings. Please don't hate me.
In the interest of full disclosure, I must tell you that I'm not extremely picky when it comes to foods that I like. Take my aforementioned love for shrimp and grits, for example: If you're serving shrimp and grits, I'll probably be happy.
That said, I really don't think that plays a role in my saying that the chicken wings at China Wok on Cotton Ave. are really good.
China Wok has a pair of lunch specials for wings that are quite an affordable deal. My choice is the 10-wing special, which comes with fries and a fountain drink for $6.99. With that, you get two sauce or flavor choices for your wings, and I got hot BBQ and lemon pepper on this day in particular.
The hot BBQ had just the right amount of kick and plenty of sauce, while the lemon pepper had good flavor. I would've probably liked a little more lemon pepper seasoning, but the lack of it showed off the chicken itself pretty well. In fact, these wings were fried to a really nice crisp without losing too much meat.
I've also had a variety of other flavors here, including a Cajun Teriyaki that is just as interesting as it sounds.
Of course, China Wok isn't all wings. They've got most of the expected dishes like lo mein, fried rice and pepper steak as well, and those come in really affordable lunch specials, as well.
There's also a very popular soup option loaded with noodles, meat and veggies that I could not, for the life of me, find on the menu. So I'm very little help on that front.
Still, when I go to China Wok, I get the wings, and I definitely will do so again.
